Barcelona
On Thursday the 16th we said goodbye to North Carolina and jumped on a plane with two loaded backpacks and one duffle bag, it was harder than I thought to pack for 5 months and prepare for different climates. Midnight eastern time we arrived in Madrid, Spain which was 6 am there. We picked up our bags successfully and stood in line for a long time waiting to get our passports stamped. We both were a little worried just because we’ve never done that before, but it went smoothly. She asked where are we going? and how long will we be there? and then Stamp, Stamp. We were off!
We took a train from Madrid to Barcelona riding threw the countryside. It was beautiful. By the time we arrived in Barcelona it was noon, we were still in our clothes from the airport the morning before and it was about 90 degrees plus humidity. We finally found our apartment we opened a big iron gate and walked up a few marble stairs and we were greeted by a young lady who was renting the apartment to us. She gave us a map and directions to a few places and told us were to find the music festival that was going on this week. So we settled in and changed into cooler clothes and started our first night out in Barcelona. We watched a water and music show at the magic fountain. We ate dinner at a beautiful, old tavern called Taverna Can Margarit. They welcomed us in with some free tastings of their own wine, which they served in jars. I ordered the roasted rabbit which was covered in thyme and had whole garlic cloves and big pieces of onions. It was tender and delicious. Justin ordered the pork loin and it came with artichokes and green and red peppers. The waiter recommended some bread for us, and it came with fresh tomato puree smeared on top. It was simple and fresh and good!
The next day we wondered through the Rambles. It’s a big street with shops and side streets and old ruins of Barcelona. We found a big market that had prosciutto and meat hanging around and tons of fresh fruit and vegetables. A whole side of it was seafood because we were close to the port. It was really fun wondering through that. Then we went across a big bridge and saw the Christopher Columbus statue that is at the port of Barcelona. We went on the beach for a quick swim and then found some fresh seafood and found out that water is way more expensive than beer at a restaurant. We made our way back to the apartment and then went out to find this music festival that was going on around our house. They had different stages set up around the street corners with different kinds of music and lots of people dancing. It was fun to see all the older ladies dancing.
Today, Sunday we journeyed to Park Guell that overlooks all of Barcelona and is covered in beautiful, colorful mosaic tile. It was amazing to walk around a see all the art. We also went to a huge cathedral called Sagrada Familia partly designed by Gaudi a famous architect. It was going through renovation on one side but it was still amazing to see the size and the details in the carvings. We walked home and passed by the largest flea market In the world. And some other huge building that we couldn’t figure out the name for. We cooked dinner at our apartment from things we bought at the market. Justin made a delicious sandwich with fresh bread, gouda cheese, fresh eggs and Jamon Serrano ham. It was a perfect ending for our day!
Tomorrow we have one last day in Spain and then we head over to France to begin our work away in a vineyard. Don’t know how much internet we will have there. Look for more pictures to come.
